Serdika Center / Floating Flowers
Serdika Center approached us with the idea of creating a spatial art installation to mark the beginning of spring. Like the season itself, it had to bring a sense of new beginnings, freshness, lightness and life – without burdening the architecture, but rather working with it.
We came up with the idea of a garden of floating flowers – a layered installation that would reveal different colours, shapes and compositions depending on the viewer’s position.
The concept was set, and so was the space – the iconic rotunda of the shopping centre, where the installation could truly bloom under the natural light.
Our main goal was to make the spring installation feel as if it were growing naturally within the space, rather than simply hanging in it.
Craft
Every element was handcrafted in advance – the flowers were made from powder-coated steel, combining durability and a clean, minimal aesthetic, with each piece going through a precise process of bending, welding and finishing.
Originally planned as solid metal elements, the stems were redesigned with a lighter structure and textile outer layer, making them more natural-looking and easier to install at height.
Execution
Just like real flowers, we had to find our way around a few obstacles. The main challenges were the short production timeline, the sheer scale of the project and the requirement to carry out the entire installation at night, without disrupting the shopping centre’s normal operation.
Once every element was completed, the entire composition had to be suspended approximately 35 metres above the ground. The installation was carried out in a single night, following a carefully prepared mounting plan that required precise positioning and close coordination across the team.
The result is a light, dynamic composition that changes with every viewpoint. As visitors move through the shopping center and between its different levels, they stumble across new shapes, perspectives and overlaps.
We’re happy that the client gave us the creative freedom to turn a seasonal theme into an original spatial installation, tailored to the architecture and character of the place.
